Please note: As McDonald Downs is a working farm, access may be closed or restricted at short notice due to weather, track conditions, farming activities or other safety considerations.
Is there mobile service?
No. Mobile phone coverage is limited or unavailable once you are travelling through McDonald Downs.
Visitors should be prepared to travel without mobile service. We recommend carrying a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for additional safety, particularly when travelling independently.
Is the property suitable for children?
Yes. Children are welcome at McDonald Downs but must be supervised by an adult at all times, particularly around livestock, farm machinery, waterways and other working areas of the station.
Is the farm spelt McDonald Downs or MacDonald Downs?
Please note: The correct name of the farm is McDonald Downs. However, the road leading to the property is spelled MacDonald Downs Road. When using GPS or online maps, please ensure you enter 438 MacDonald Downs Road.
Please also be aware that Google Maps and Google Earth may occasionally direct visitors to Clark Hall Road. This is incorrect, as Clark Hall Road is a neighbouring property and not the entrance to McDonald Downs. Our farm entrance is clearly signposted 438 McDonald Downs, making it easy to find.
Can I bring a 2WD car?
2WD vehicles can access the accommodation area near the beginning of the property but are not suitable for travelling the station road beyond this point.
A 4WD or suitable high-clearance vehicle is required for vehicle access through the station.
Are pets allowed?
No. As McDonald Downs is a working sheep and beef station, pets are not permitted on the property.
Where is the closest fuel station?
The nearest fuel stations are located in Waikari and Hawarden.
We recommend filling up before arriving, particularly if you plan to continue through the station and into Lees Valley.
Where is a toilet located?
Toilet facilities are available at the woolshed complex, with signage on the property directing visitors to the woolshed.
Additional bathroom facilities are also available for guests staying in our accommodation.
Do I need to book before arriving?
Yes. Farm access must be booked in advance before travelling through McDonald Downs. Once your booking has been confirmed and paid, you'll receive further information for your journey, including the locked gate code.
What happens if the weather changes?
As McDonald Downs is a working high-country station, weather and track conditions can change quickly. Farm access may be restricted, postponed or closed at short notice if conditions are considered unsafe.
If we need to postpone your booking, we'll work with you to arrange a suitable alternative date or provide a refund.
How long does it take to travel through McDonald Downs?
Allow approximately one hour of driving time to travel through the station to the boundary gate. We recommend allowing a little extra time so you can take your time and enjoy the journey.
Travel times may vary depending on track, weather and farming conditions.
Can I travel through by motorbike or push bike?
Yes. Our station road can be experienced by adventure motorbike or push bike, as well as suitable 4WD vehicles.
Riders should be confident travelling through changing high-country conditions and be prepared for gravel, river crossings, livestock, step inclines, farm vehicles and limited mobile phone coverage.
Pre-booking is required for all farm access.
